First time post so please bear with me if I'm in the wrong place. I'm
using the Installing a complete IDS using the IIS 5/6 Webserver
located at winsnort.com and get this error when attempting to test the
configuration. I have snort ver2_1_1 and WinPcap ver3.0 installed onto
this w2k3 server. This is what I've done so far:
From the command prompt:

D:\Applications\Snort\bin>snort -v -ix
Running in packet dump mode
Log directory = log

Initializing Network Interface x»
ERROR: OpenPcap() device x» open:
Error opening adapter: The system cannot find the file specified.
Fatal Error, Quitting..

If I type snort -v I'm able to see traffic.
If I type snort /service /install I get this:

[SNORT_SERVICE] Attempting to install the Snort service.

[SNORT_SERVICE] The full path to the Snort binary appears to be:
D:\Applications\Snort\bin\snort /SERVICE

[SNORT_SERVICE] Successfully added registry keys to:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Snort\

[SNORT_SERVICE] Successfully added the Snort service to the Services database.

If I type snort /service /install -de -c
d:\applications\snort\etc\snort.conf –l d:\applications\snort\etc\log
–ix I get this:

[SNORT_SERVICE] Attempting to install the Snort service.

[SNORT_SERVICE] The full path to the Snort binary appears to be:
D:\Applications\Snort\bin\snort /SERVICE

[SNORT_SERVICE] Successfully added registry keys to:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Snort\

[SNORT_SERVICE] Successfully added the Snort service to the Services database.

Now if I attempt to start the service using the net start snort
command I get the following error:

D:\Applications\Snort\bin>net start snort
The Snort service is starting.
The Snort service could not be started.

A system error has occurred.

System error 1067 has occurred.

The process terminated unexpectedly.

Can someone advise me on what I'm doing wrong? I've posted this
message in the winsnort forums also. A few searches show this to be an
issue with WinPcap but from what I've read the output generated from
the snort -W is an idicator that winpcap is installed and running
properly. I'm new to this so any responses are appreciated.

Thanks
