I'm not sure if you have looked at nagios, but we are using it to
monitor everything on our servers, including snort and barnyard.  Very
extensible tool.

Jeez, Lance...It seems it would merely be more simple to have the host
notify your boss via e-mail when/if snort or barnyard or both are NOT
running...but who am I to deny your boss a mailbox full of pesky
notification messages if that is his wont.
