I think I sent this the wrong place first. There is a utility called sdelete. Google for it. It will do multiple passes 
and wipe disk. Create a 98 boot disk with sdelete on it. If you can't find it email me off list.

Preferably something thorough?

There is no silver bullet.  If the drive doesn't need to be used again,
hand it over to your nearest machine shop for destruction.  If you plan
for it to be used again, can the data on it *truly* be that secure?  ;-)
