Windows by default will not let you sent out icmp packets past a certain byte value. I think *NIXs byte value is less then windows's. Drop to a shell on *nix and type 'man ping'. I'm running SuSE 8.2 and
I
found this option, which is also present in the ping on my OpenBSD
box:
-s packetsize Specifies the number of data bytes to be sent. The default is 56, which translates into 64 ICMP data bytes when combined with the 8 bytes of ICMP header data. You'll probably have issues if you aren't root.
this is what happened on windows ? use the modified cygwin tool for windows, -aditya F:\>ping 127.0.0.1 /? Usage: ping [-t] [-a] [-n count] [-l size] [-f] [-i TTL] [-v TOS] [-r count] [-s count] [[-j host-list] | [-k host-list]] [-w timeout] destination-list Options: -t Ping the specified host until stopped. To see statistics and continue - type Control-Break; To stop - type Control-C. -a Resolve addresses to hostnames. -n count Number of echo requests to send. -l size Send buffer size. -f Set Don't Fragment flag in packet. -i TTL Time To Live. -v TOS Type Of Service. -r count Record route for count hops. -s count Timestamp for count hops. -j host-list Loose source route along host-list. -k host-list Strict source route along host-list. -w timeout Timeout in milliseconds to wait for each reply. F:\>ping 127.0.0.1 -l 1000000 Bad value for option -l, valid range is from 0 to 65500.
