-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 In what capacity? Different OS's are used for different things. The short answer: you should know something about them all. The more you know about one, the more its going to help you understand others. Much like programming. If you want generalizations, a lot of the world today is *nix servers and MS desktops. You'll even find many vendors(like checkpoint) who have servers/firewalls/routers/appliances that are running *nix, but whose client software is Windows-only. There are quite a few souls out there working on *nix hardware from windows workstations...often not by choice. Its probably good to get familiar with IOS as well. Obviously its very widely used. "security administration" is just kind of vague to me. My general feeling is a lot of administration is done from Windows clients, while things like pen-tests and audits are more easily done from a *nix workstation. John Williams wrote:
I am a graduate student at George Mason University obtaining my MS in Information Security and Assurance. What operating system is used more for security administration in the private sector versus the government sector? Pretty much I would like to know what operating system I should focus on if I wanted to pursue a government career in security or if I wanted to purse a career in the private sector. Thanks.
