I would never use an open Wifi for doing any sensitive transactions
(e.g. logging into my bank account, making payments online,) if the
website is not SSL enabled.

My friend uses a NON-split tunnel SSL gateway he has setup at home to
browse the internet on a public wifi.....This way anyone else on the
public wifi can not sniff anything useful.
