Summary: some smartphones uses the phones' GPS to embed the location coordinates into the EXIF metadata of the photos taken with the camera. Some digital cameras have GPS units also, but they are more rare. Larry Pesce did a good presentation about this and setup an associated website: http://icanstalku.com/ http://www.mayhemiclabs.com/content/hope-slides-icanstalku-datasets-and-privacy Here is another related blogpost: http://isc.sans.edu/diary.html?storyid=8203 On Fri, Jan 21, 2011 at 10:42 AM, Steven Bonici <sbonici () ilaonline org> wrote:
I was speaking to someone from DHS (not a tech) and he was telling me that there are applications that can "look" at a picture taken from a cell phone and can get the location of where the picture was taken. Is this true? If so, can someone provide more information? If this can be done, people posting pictures from their cell phones to social sites should be aware of this...
