While I have no experience with Google for student email, I've used their IMAP services for my personal account as well
as their hosted email service for domains and the IMAP experience is very good and works with nearly every IMAP client
I've thrown at it. It is also SSL protected on both the send and receive.

Can anybody share their experience with Gmail for student email accounts and IMAP access? I am particularly interested
in IMAP account configuration and authentication.

Thanks,
