so if any teenagers get caught with weed, they can just say that it's their religious right to smoke pot... Court arguments can be something like: "Church of Passdabonga members can only reach an inner peace with their God by smoking weed. These "pot-parties" are not set to certain times of the day or times of the week and can happen at any time, usually around dusk." OK, I'm all for religious freedom and the separation of church and state. BUT, it's an illegal substance that they are consuming during these 4 hour "rituals". Just sounds like an organized LSD party to me. It could be worse, heck I have nothing against people sitting around for 4 hours getting high attempting to contact God.... Hell, that describes the majority of my teenage life from 16 to 20ish years old :-) Mike B Michael P. Who cares -- I can only connect to my God under the influence of hallucinogenics, too. :-) Via MSNBC. [snip] The Supreme Court ruled unanimously Tuesday that a small congregation in New Mexico may use hallucinogenic tea as part of a four-hour ritual intended to connect with God. Justices, in their first religious freedom decision under Chief Justice John Roberts, moved decisively to keep the government out of a church's religious practice. Federal drug agents should have been barred from confiscating the hoasca tea of the Brazil-based church, Roberts wrote in the decision. The tea, which contains an illegal drug known as DMT, is considered sacred to members of O Centro Espirita Beneficiente Uniao do Vegetal, which has a blend of Christian beliefs and South American traditions. Members believe they can understand God only by drinking the tea, which is consumed twice a month at four-hour ceremonies.
