Assuming, of course, that lives were *saved* in the incidents in question.

If you get attacked by a mugger, and chase him off by brandishing a gun,
does it count as a "life saved"?  Probably not, as not all muggers kill
all their victims.

I'll buy that 2M to 4M people have been in situations where having a gun
helped their bargaining position. But that's different than "lives saved",
just as I've been in car crashes where wearing a seat belt *helped* - but
it didn't save my life - just a broken nose or knocked out teeth from
not hitting the dashboard with my face....
