and Wales soared from 864 in 1998-99 to 3,821 in 2005-06.
Actually, it's virtually impossible to draw meaningful conclusions either way from Home Office figures, as the only thing that doesn't keep changing in the way firearms-related crimes are reported is their inconsistency. For instance, while that figure doesn't include air weapons, it does include imitation weapons and injury includes "used as a threat" as well as physical injury.
