Smoothwall, PFsense, Untangle, etc. are free for home use and give you the flexibility to choose your own hardware. They are also generally SME quality and far more than you need for a home network. Beyond that, most routers these days are in fact combination router/firewall appliances. I can't imagine you would need anything more than a small Netgear network "appliance" for your home network. But, if you don't feel like getting your hands dirty with the *nix homebrew route, you can go that way. http://www.smoothwall.org/ http://www.pfsense.org/ http://www.untangle.com/ Steve Mullins On Wed, Jan 13, 2010 at 6:24 AM, <Paul.Simons () thomsonreuters com> wrote:
Hello List It is about time for me to renew my subscription for my home firewall appliance. I am currently allowed to use 5 'nodes' accessing the internet at the same time and I have a URL filtering subscription along with the usual software/hardware support. With Father Christmas being particularly fond of devices that require an IP address (iPods - Xboxes - etc) I need to upgrade from 5 to 25 nodes. In total I am going to have to pay around 900 US dollars!!! What are my alternatives? I have looked at Sonicwall, Sofaware, etc. Any recommendations? other solutions to keep my home network and kids safe? Thanks in advance.
