The problem with the GoodMail scheme is that they pay a penny a piece for
all million recipients. That's $10K, not $1K.

Please re-read my example. I was supposing a (non-spam) mailing by an ISP
of 1 million, of which 100,000 goes to AOL members, which means a cost of
$1000. 

The great thing about the Goodmail scheme, is that if a spammer wants to 
spew out 100 million junk emails, then if he wants the premium service for 
those, it'll cost him $1 million. Yes, you read that right. And that's why 
spammers aren't going to send totally untargeted email to completely 
uninterested people, in the hope that they get a couple of dozen sales out 
of the 100 million emails.
