I don't want to rely on the VPN which, in any event, imposes a performance hit on streaming video. Is there a good general solution around this problem?
You could always band together with others who are unhappy and get a 1U box colocated somewhere that's not in any baseball team's local market, then run a high performance proxy server there for the participants to bounce through. As long as it's on good connectivity, and you're just proxying without VPN encryption overhead, you shouldn't run into the performance hit.
Finding good colo/bandwidth in a non-MLB-market city might be a little difficult, but shouldn't be completely impossible...
