Re: AOL CD with Virus - Old Info

I have two 5.0 coasters^H^H^H^H^Hcds, part numbers are "A0700R801" (C) 1999, and "A0700R802" (C) 1999.

I don't see any indication of "5a" or "5b", but *801 *802 might mean a&b, or blank&a if they started zero based...

After a good cleaning, neither showed viri with AVG scans. YMMV.

I had a copy of the CD for years though after moving a few times it vanished. I remember that AOL had 5.a, b and c
out when this happened. It was the "a" release if memory serves. I also remember all the hoaxes which is why I was
skeptical at first when my buddy called me up (ya know, free tech support 24x7 for your pals). After trying the install
myself, indeed a virus was present. We got on the horn with AOL and the nice lady who answered said they were aware of
the issue and she would mail us a new CD immediately. She instructed us to pitch the bad CD in the trash but of course
I kept it. The bad CD was mailed to my pal in northern Virginia (maybe 10 miles from AOL HQ) back when this happened.

I don't remember any AOL-related incidents, other than hoaxes.

I forget who asked about this but about 1999ish, a buddy of mine
received a 5.X install disk from AOL. After he installed the software,
he had an infection. I don't recall the name of it but I do know that
when he called AOL, they were very aware of the issue.

Still don't recognize this. There was a rumour around 1995 that AOL floppies
were infected with BUPT, but AOL claimed that there were no verified
instances, and there was a CIAC advisory to that effect. There were loads of
AOL-connected virus hoaxes, of course.
