Well, a somewhat refined form of the leftover sludge...

It's a thick, black spread not entirely dissimilar in taste to Bovril 
and other such (??) concentrates from which "Beef Tea" is made, but 
having NO animal products included in its derivation or manufacture.

In my generation it was one of the stable foods -- a school child's 
lunch-box _without_ a Vegemite/Marmite and cheese sandwich would be 
almost unheard of at my primary school!

It is now all but forgotten, but "way back" it used to say (on the 
Marmite jar lid) "Too much spoils the flavour" which is certainly true 
(with some arguing that _ANY AMOUNT_ is therefore necessarily too 
much!), but as you can imagine, that did not suit the marketing folk, 
so that slogan went long ago...
