Actually, the word is generally translated "serpent" in English, but seems to be 
more closely related to lizards than snakes.  Also, the form of the story seems to 
be a classic "how it came to be" literary/storytelling type, indicating that the 
denouement, about moving on his belly, is used as an explanation of how some 
lizards lost their legs and became snakes.  It may be a classic story form that 
became incorporated into a theological work.
