Remind me where you got these "fists and feet" statistics; I see a figure
a bit less. But that's not important - don't you see? If you make murder
easier by giving everyone a gun, the percentage of murders using feet and
fists goes down, and the total number of murders goes up.

That assertion doesn't seem to be borne out by the limited studies
that have been done on the subject. It's somewhat hard to tell, of
course, because it's unusual for gun laws to become more lax over
time. Still, the closest proxy we have here in the states is studying
the incidence of violent crime after loosening the restrictions on
carrying a firearm (not necessarily owning one, but the right to carry
a concealed weapon as you go about your daily business).

I'm afraid I don't understand the statistical methodology well enough
to evaluate the data on my own, but there have been several scholarly
papers on the subject. The consensus seems to be that there is no
particular effect one way or another when more people carry guns.

I'm sure there are lots of others, since I've seen quite a few stories
on this over the years, but I don't have time to dig them up at the
moment.

What do you suppose would be the effect, if we gave a rifle, shotgun and
handgun, plus lots of ammunition, to each family in Iraq?
