Also I am
completely unqualified to have an opinion on the basics
involved.

Why is that?

The "basics" is high-school science. It's the "scientific-method", "thermal radiation", and "absorption spectra". I
remember learning all three in high-school.

The basics of the skeptics argument is about the scientific-method specifically. Skeptics believe that computer models
should not replace empirical evidence, and that historic reconstructions should be reproducible. The hacked e-mails
don't show a hoax or a fraud to make up data, but they do show a conspiracy to prevent their results from being
reproduced by the public. How can anybody in civilized society not be qualified to understand and have an opinion on
the reproducibility of results?
