It seems quite unlikely to me that this is connected the the NSA
story. I know from my personal experience working for a CLEC that
subpoenas for call records are fairly easy to obtain in conncetion
with an ongoing investigation. I imagine it's actually easier for
police or prosecutors to get a subpoena than to gain access to data
collected by a (until recently) secret NSA spy program.

Besides, if there's any chance these records will be presented as
evidence in court, I'd imagine that the people involved would like to
make sure they are obtained in a legal manner, and not in a way that
will turn an already politically charged case into even more of a
circus.
